After it became clear in mid-March 2020 that COVID-19 was developing into a worldwide pandemic, a group of core organizers, including some of our board members, rallied a rapid response and offered a 2-hour webinar—crafted by farmers, for farmers. It included farmers and non-farmer speakers from government agencies, non-profits and a food hub. We included time for peer-to-peer breakout sessions and then finished with a Q&A with all the speakers. Please see links below for the recorded video and full transcript of this event.
Excerpted from the intro of this session, Vero Vergara of Sweet Hollow Farm:
"Throughout our process of putting this rapid response webinar together, we’ve been very focused on deep listening and your voices ring through loud and clear- this is a time when many of us are holding onto anxiety, uncertainty, fear, and pain. In this same moment, we also want to name the common threads of farmers being geniuses who are setting forth to persevere with feeding our communities and building innovative, inclusive networks of care and resource distribution. The momentum we’re seeing from our communities of producers tells us that this moment has immense potential to build into a farmer-led movement that has the power to positively change the practices and frameworks of agriculture and food systems in our nation.
We want to be up front with you all that our team of organizers and panelists know that we won’t be able to answer all the questions or speak to all the themes that have come out of the registration survey or that are rising up from our communities. We are all here with the knowledge that we are experiencing rapidly changing conditions, our organizers have been working tirelessly to build this container for community discussion and are already exploring what next steps can look like from here. The enormous amount of support and engagement we’ve received shows us that this session is just the beginning! Please know there is more to come.”
The resource list below is the blossom from that seed planted in this webinar. It is the gem of the radicchio shiny sweetness burned by the harsh winter. We hope you find something useful out of it all. At the very least, know that you are not alone—we are hundreds together, stronger and more beautiful than ever.
